Native Gardens

Designing with Natives
California's Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild wet winters provides the ideal conditions for a variety of plants from around the world to thrive. Many exotic plants from around the world flourish here, but they require additional input, such as soil amendments, fertilizers, pest control and additional water, for continued maintenance. These plants tend to grow very fast and require constant pruning and mowing. This results in the use of fossil fuels and generates more green waste than slower growing native plants. Native plants, on the other hand, have evolved and adapted to California's unique soil, weather conditions and pest controls. As a result, they are more cost effective, easier to maintain and contribute to local ecosystems.
I design my gardens using nature as a model and focusing on plant communities that work in harmony with one another. As in nature, there are unique microclimates within each garden. Different conditions in the garden foster the growth of specific plants. These plants often have symbiotic relationships creating soil conditions at the microbial level that produce stronger, healthier plants. I analyze the existing landscape and select plants appropriate for the specific conditions of the garden as well as the aesthetic needs of the homeowner. I believe that using plant communities creates visually stunning gardens because nature is the ultimate designer.
